I will be re-posting member features that were originally done for the Star Realms Fan Created Community Group on Facebook. Patrick Compton posts these weekly-ish at the fan page. I am starting with one of my favorites.
I can’t even try to be witty for this weeks Meet-A-Member. Just an all around great guy and badass SR player. Mazer Rackham!

DESCRIBE YOUR GAMING LIFE (I.E. FAVORITE GAMES, ARE YOU INVOLVED IN OTHER ONLINE GAMES AND IF SO WHAT IS YOU IGN (WOULD YOU LIKE FRIENDLY CHALLENGES ON THESE) ON THOSE, ETC)
It’s funny, my gaming obsessions over the last few years have always been kickstarted by my students’ misconceived notion that, because they’re younger, are also automatically better than me in video or card games. This is immediately followed by my alpha-dog/testosterone driven compulsion to accept their challenge and subsequently (and repeatedly) crush them in said game -in front of their friends- until they a) cry and quit or b) submit and ask me to be their school gaming club’s Advisor. Hahaha… Thankfully, the answer to that one is “b.”
In 2009, a kid brought in his old PlayStation to my class on the last day of school talking all sorts of mess and challenged me to a set of Street Fighter II (Hyper)… After I beat him 14 times in a row (laughing my ass off in the process), he started a “Fighting Game Club” and forced me to be the Advisor. I went to EVO that summer, got hooked, bought a PS3 and took my kids to Street Fighter IV tourneys around the Bay Area for the next two years. In 2010, another group of kids came into my room at lunch with the jankiest Magic decks I’d ever seen. Refusing on principle to let my children play with crappy cards like “Drain Power” and “Lady Orca,” I broke out my old Extended decks (from the Tempest era) and taught them how to construct and play Burn. Multiple dozens of trips to FNMs (and the occasional field trip to a GP) later, a lot of those kids –now adults– are MtG addicts and my friends at the LGS, nerd brothers and sisters for life.
Last year, my first year teaching at Petaluma High School, the Magic nerds found out that I play and started slinging in my room at lunch. As per the script, I ended up being their Club Advisor and we ended up going to GP San Jose and the States Championship at Versus Games in San Francisco; we had a great time! I loved those boys, but they were all Seniors and have now graduated, so current membership of our club is in flux. Not to worry, however: I have grand plans to introduce Star Realms and Epic to a new group of kids at lunch and after-school this coming year… I’ll keep y’all posted on that 😉
TELLS US ABOUT YOU AS A STAR REALMS PLAYER (I.E. FAVORITE FACTION, CARD AND/OR ANY SPECIAL RIVALS YOU WANT TO MENTION).
IGN: MazerRackham (I’m Ender Wiggin’s teacher and I know how to beat the Buggers :p)
Current Stats: Level 41 (28/42), 2773 Total Wins, 4591 Total Games, 60% Win Percentage
Quote: “Since when do you have to tell the enemy when he has won?”
Favorite Faction: Machine Cult. Scrap till it works, brother.
Favorite Card: Blob Destroyer. Reason? IT’S A GIGANTIC SPACE TURTLE.
Pet Card: Battle Mech. By itself, it’s a piece of crap ship that deals a measly 4 damage and is a waste of deck-space. With 2 or more other scrappers in the deck, it’s a faction ally magnet, a mini-Ark that just straight wins the game.
Favorite 3-card/5-card opening: Missile Bot into Battle Mech
Favorite 5-card/5-card opening: double Cutter into IT DOESN’T MATTER.
Favorite Deck to Build: Mono Red mini-scrappers. If you get 4 cheap scrappers before your 2nd deck cycle, you can scrap all the Scouts and Vipers from your deck before your 4th cycle and you end up beating your opponent around turn 20 with a 7-card deck –none of the cards of which cost more than 4 gold– that deals 14 a turn… It’s so pretty!
Natural Rival: bugbatteries (Jeremy Krull), cause who else would MazerRackham’s rival be?!
Toughest Opponents: In my experience, the most complete online Star Realms players in the world (and the hardest to beat) are CrShaner (Chris Shaner) and benjotron (Benjamin Gartner). I feel I’m pretty much 50/50 against most players lv.25 and up, but against those two guys I’m lucky to crack 30/70, and that’s over 200+ games. The way those guys approach deckbuilding and gameplan execution is impeccable… I appreciate getting paired against them because, regardless of the outcome, I get better. Special shout-out to timebear; I was 1-and-10 against that guy before he stopped playing; he was a BEAST.
Opponents I Always Get Up For: Darwin (cause I’m a fanboy) and TheCutter (Matt Newberg). Matt’s my brother in this game… I don’t think anyone loves this game more than him and our daily games are a ritual I wouldn’t trade for all the Jack in the Box tacos in the world 😉 I also think Joe Cylon and HomerJr (Scott Heise) are up lifetime against me… I gotta get better and change that 😛
WHAT’S A FUN FACT OR INTERESTING BIT ABOUT YOU?
Before becoming a teacher, I was a marine biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service and did fish identification and sampling work on a 475ft catcher-processor out in the middle of the Bering Sea for a year. Forty-foot swells, dangerous freezing conditions, and flocks of birds so thick they blot out the sky… Hell of a job, but still WAY easier than teaching!
WHAT LED YOU TO THE STAR REALMS PAGE?
Just looking for general strategy tips online and, hey, there’s a Star Realms Community on Facebook! One thing I really appreciate about this community is that it’s a bit older, competitive but not hyper-competitive (to the point where a person’s sense of worth is tied to their win-loss record), and filled with good, nice people. The Fighting Game Community is a bunch of arrogant, over-testosteronated boys in their mid-20’s, and the tournament MtG Community in the Bay Area is even younger, populated by a bunch of trolls and milksops with too much money and too much misogyny. This community is more my speed… I love you guys! 😊
Thanks for letting me share, y’all… I don’t usually accept challenges from folks I don’t know (because I usually have 30-40 active games in queue) but I’ll accept if I know you’re from the FB page… Just pm me your IGN when you send a challenge so I know who you are; thanks!
